Jonathan Orlando Álvarez C.

 is a Venezuelan-Spanish double bassist specializing in modern and historically informed performance. Since 2024, following a successful audition, he has served as Principal Double Bass of Kamerata Armonía Atenea in Athens, alongside his international activity with il Pomo d'Oro, whose specialist roster he joined in 2018.

He has performed at major venues including Teatro alla Scala, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Royal Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall, Het Concertgebouw, Berliner Philharmonie, Wiener Musikverein, Teatro Real, and Teatro Colón. He has shared the stage with Joyce DiDonato, Cecilia Bartoli, Philippe Jaroussky, Jakub Józef Orliński, Lisette Oropesa, Viktoria Mullova, and María Dueñas, and worked under conductors such as Francesco Corti, Maxim Emelyanychev, Georg Petrou, and Zefira Valova.

His discography comprises more than 15 recordings, several awarded distinctions such as Diapason d'Or, Gramophone Critics' Choice, and the Edison Award. His work has also been broadcast by Mezzo, Medici.tv, and ARTE.

Born in Los Teques, Venezuela, he trained through Venezuela's National System of Youth and Children's Orchestras (El Sistema), the National Academy of Double Bass of Venezuela, and the National University of the Arts. He performed with the country's leading orchestras, working with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado, Gustavo Dudamel, Rafael Payare, and Alondra de la Parra. After moving to Spain, he collaborated with several Spanish orchestras, among them the Sinfónica de Galicia, Sinfónica de la Comunidad de Madrid, and Sinfónica de Tenerife, while increasingly focusing his professional activity on historically informed performance.

His work encompasses historical violone and contrabass instruments as well as the modern double bass, with repertoire spanning from the Renaissance and early Baroque through the Classical and Romantic periods to modern symphonic repertoire, alongside a particular interest in folk music and its connections with historical and classical traditions. Álvarez is also co-founder and Artistic Director of Orquesta Humboldt, developing projects combining historically informed performance, research, and orchestral and chamber repertoire.

Beyond the concert stage, folk music and dance remain an essential part of his musical identity — from playing to dancing, with salsa never too far away.
